History

The Family & Workplace Connection, formerly Child Care Connection, began as a pilot child care resource and referral program in New Castle County, Delaware in late 1985 with a start-up grant from DuPont. The organization was incorporated in November 1986 in Delaware and began functioning as a corporate entity in July 1987. FWC is eligible for tax-deductible contributions as 501(c)(3). 

 

Below are key events in FWC's history:

 

1986

  • Child Care Connection launched, with help from DuPont start-up grant
  • Moves into United Way Building, Wilmington, DE

1987

1988

  • Expands referral services statewide, opens Milford, DE office

1989

  • Begins ACT Scholarship program 
  • Initiates Cans for Kids recycling fundraising program

1990 

  • Launches community line service
  • Moves to Baynard Building, Concord Plaza, Wilmington, DE

1991

  • Expands Child and Adult Care Food Program statewide
  • Presents first Delaware Tomorrow Award

1992

  • Begins School-Age Child Care Expansion project
  • Expands services to nearby Pennsylvania and Maryland
  • Southern DE office moves to Murphey School, Dover
  • Opens Kent and Sussex Resource Centers
  • Receives Delaware First provider training contract
  • Moves to Wilson Building, Concord Plaza

1993

  • Opens New Castle County Resource Center

  • Becomes The Family & Workplace Connection 

1997

  • Opens Southbridge Children’s Center
  • Begins managing Child Care Capacity Building program
  • Begins coordinating four FACET child care programs
  • Southern DE office moves to Bradford Street, Dover

1998

  • Adds education and on-line resource and referral services
  • Expands Just in Time Care program beyond regional borders
  • Launches Quality Plus program
  • Creates LifeTime Services corporate benefits package
  • Begins operating Kent/Sussex mobile resource center 

1999

  • Adds EAP to corporate services
  • Begins operating New Castle County mobile resource center

2000

  • Launches nationwide Just in Time Care service

2001

  • Develops elder care expansion plan

2002

  • Opens Resource Center for child care providers at Wilmington College
  • Initiates Child Care Health Consultants program
  • Co-sponsors Elder Care Awareness Conference 
  • Begins Spanish-speaking support group 
  • Provides on-site child care to 150 children at Rodel Foundation’s “Schools of Dreams” conference

2004

  • Begins T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood
  • Coordinates First Annual Early Childhood Advocacy Day
  • Opens child care resource center at Shortlidge Academy in Wilmington
  • Presents workshop on the ElderBuddy program at the National Alliance for Work-Life Progress Conference
2005
  • Launches ElderOnline
  • Celebrates 10-year anniversary of Just in Time Care® program
  • Reestablishes Child and Adult Care Food Program newsletter through a grant from Kraft Foods International
2006
  • Celebrates first graduate of T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood Program
  • City of Wilmington Resource Center moves to Warner Elementary
